“Painting, photography, and film are parts of one problem although their techniques may be entirely different. They belong to the same realm; that is, to visual expression, where cross-fertilizations are possible.”

Làszlò Moholy-Nagy believed that in an era of political and economical struggle, film was a record of facts - a reportage. In addition, he also felt that film was a medium of exploration and he devised many methods that are still in use today.

From documentary pieces such as "Lobsters" and "Grossstadt Zigeuner (Gypsies" to experimental works like "Lichtspiel Schwarz, Weiss, Grau", Moholy-Nagy believed the motion picture played a significant role as an

investigative tool in exploring the realms of systemic optical research, three-dimensions, and as an aide in the development of abstract experimentation.
